Do coral reefs have human value? According to this article called "Coral Reefs: Ecosystems of Enviornmental and Human Value" by Anup Shah, coral reefs do indeed have human value. Many people think that coral reefs dont have human value, but actually it does. Coral reefs are actually bleaching and dying. Coral reefs are very useful to us humans, for example: protecting shores from the impact of waves and storms, providing benefits to humans in the form of food and medicine, and providing economic benefits to local communities from tourism. The US agency NOAA ( National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ) says that coral reefs provide jobs, food, and tourism and this is estimated to be $375 billion each year. Sadly some barrier reefs are being destroyed from catastrophes. Australias Great Barrier Reef is the top notch and most visited coral reef because of its beautifulness and wide variety of corals. In 2009 there was a report that Australias Great Barrier Reef would suffer a serious catastraphic damage. Global threats that are causing reefs to extinct are: coastal development, overfishing, inland poluttion, global climate change, and ocean acidification caused by some of the excess carbon dioxide emissions being absorbed by the worlds ocean.
I chose this article because I thinkk coral reefs are really interesting
The next step is to save the corals and prevent them from being extinct from global climate change. Most are being extinct from catastraphic causings but we cant do anything about that. We can prevent the other global threats by reserving the areas and use them for only tourism.
