Info: we were supposed to create a ''plankton'' out the given materials so that our 'plankton' stayed neutral, in between the surface and the bottom of the water. The plankton that could stay in the middle or that could sink the slowest would get a prize. Also, our teacher gave an award for the most creative. Unfortunately, my group didn't win any award, due to the fact that not everyone put effort into it except myself.
Instructions:
Observe videos/pictures of plankton then Discuss adaptations they have to help maintain their neutral buoyancy in the water column.
What are Plankton? Plankton are small microscopic organisms drifting or floating in the sea or fresh water.
What do plankton eat? What is the difference between phytoplankton and zooplankton?
Phytoplankton is an organism that makes up the foundation of the marine food web. It relies on photosynthesis. It is comprised of single-celled algae, diatoms, and bacteria. Zooplankton "drifts". They are not good swimmers. Zooplankton feeds off of phytoplankton.
Why are plankton important?
Plankton are important due to the fact that they are so small. Although they are at the bottom of the food chain, fish are able to feed off them.
Where would they hang out?
Plankton hang out during the morning under the ocean, at night they rise to feed.
Why would plankton want to stay in the photic zone?
Photosynthesis, the sun is their energy.
Plankton have special adaptation that allows them to stay there.
Materials:
Tin Foil
Clay
Cotton Swabs
Foam paper
Balloons
Hair Rolls
Sticks
Straw
Procedure:
Make a plankton that is neutrally buoyant. Or if you are unable to do so, then you have to make your 'plankton' sink the slowest. Which is very difficult to do.
